Slot Cars: Race Track On Your Floor

March 5th, 2010 · No Comments · Body Building

All over the world slot car racing has turn out to be a popular hobby for numerous enthusiasts.  Electric toy cars such as slot cars run along slotted tracks where electric current flows to power the cars.  These slots are also where the metallic blade from the slot cars fit all the way to the slot base.  The majority of slot car hobbyists carry out races with other enthusiasts on more than one occasion but there are a few who dedicate their time and money to make scenic layouts, modeling roads and highways, and simulating urban and rural traffic.

A lot of first-timers begin their collection with cars that are available commercially.  Commercialy-made slot cars are made for improved performance on standard tracks.  Long-time enthusiasts regularly do some modifications or assemble them from individual sections and customize them to make aerodynamic frames and be stable on the racetrack.

Customization of slot cars is also one of the most sought after activity besides racing them.  Just like real cars, slot cars have rubber tires which can be changed and bodywork and mechanical changes is to make them more faster and make them more stylish.  Slot cars are basically faster than the fastest formula 1 racing car given that they can reach speeds of up to 1800 rpm.

Slot car drivers control their mini race-cars by operating a controller with just one hand and it’s function is to control the voltage of the electric motor inside the car.  Changes in slot car hobbying has for the most part been with the handheld controller and the cars themselves but the track virtually remained the same ever since the 1950s.  Slot car tracks originally separate cars by the slots but new developments have made it possible for cars to share lanes during a race.  The technique in racing slot cars comes on the curved sections where the controller’s trigger should be given the proper pressure to avoid de-slotting or lose momentum that will cause the racer to lose.

Slot cars are similar to model trains hobby.  Hobbyists of slot cars and model trains both form the track range, build sceneries which include trees and miniature structures.  The only difference is slot cars move faster than model trains and more people can participate in slot cars compared to the essentially solo operation of model trains.

Additional types of slot vehicles can come in the form of motorcycles and trucks.  Scale sizes such as 1:24, 1:32 and H0 are the most common scale sizes for slot cars.

The introduction of traction magnets have also made it easier for slot cars to be able to turn on tight corners at high speeds without getting thrown out the track.  Regardless of the added safety feature of traction magnets, some enthusiasts choose to race without them.  Traction magnet-less slot cars have a tendency to drift and de-slotting could happen more which lots of racers prefer to have for additional excitement.
